Itinerary Details
Day 1 — Arrival (Arusha)
Arrive at your lodge in Arusha
Evening briefing and equipment check (insurance/medical coverage confirmation)
Day 2 — Londorossi Gate → Lemosho Forest Camp
Register at Londorossi gate, drive to the trailhead, then start trekking through forest
Wildlife may be seen in this zone
Overnight: Lemosho Forest Camp (8,600 ft)
Trek: 2–3 hours, 2.9 miles, +1,700 ft
Day 3 — Lemosho Forest Camp → Shira One Camp
Leave the forest and enter the moorland zone
Steady climb with expanding views toward the Shira Plateau
Overnight: Shira One Camp (11,600 ft)
Trek: 6–7 hours, 4.9 miles, +3,000 ft
Day 4 — Shira Plateau exploration → Shira Hut
Acclimatization-focused day on the Shira Plateau
Hike to Shira Cathedral (12,800 ft) and continue to camp
Overnight: Shira Hut (12,600 ft)
Trek: 4–5 hours, 9.9 miles, +1,000 ft
Day 5 — Shira Hut → Lava Tower → Barranco Camp
Traverse volcanic terrain beneath glaciers and reach Lava Tower (15,150 ft) for lunch
Descend into the Barranco Valley to sleep lower for acclimatization
Overnight: Barranco Camp (12,800 ft)
Trek: 5–7 hours, 6.3 miles, +200 ft
Day 6 — Barranco Camp → Karanga Camp
Climb the Barranco Wall, then traverse along Kibo’s flank
Views of the Southern Icefields are common from this section
Overnight: Karanga Camp (13,100 ft)
(noted as the last water point on the way to the summit)Trek: 4–6 hours, 3.2 miles, +300 ft
Day 7 — Karanga Camp → Barafu Hut
Steady climb on compacted scree to the high camp
Short acclimatization walk, early dinner, and rest for summit night
Overnight: Barafu Hut (14,800 ft)
Trek: 3–5 hours, 3.4 miles, +1,700 ft
Day 8 — Summit day: Barafu → Stella Point → Uhuru Peak → Millenium Camp
Start around 1:00 a.m.
Reach Stella Point (18,800 ft) around sunrise
Optional push to Uhuru Peak (19,345 ft), then descend past Barafu and continue down
Overnight: Millenium Camp (12,500 ft)
Trek: 11–15 hours, 8.2 miles, +4,545 ft gain / -6,845 ft loss
Day 9 — Millenium Camp → Mweka Gate → Lodge
Descend through forest to Mweka Gate (5,400 ft)
Continue to Mweka village and transfer back to your lodge
Trek: 4–6 hours, 7.6 miles, -7,100 ft
Day 10 — Departure (JRO)
After breakfast, transfer to Kilimanjaro International Airport (about 45 minutes by road)
